An Ordinary man
As some of you may know, I take great pride in my job. I love it. I eat sleep and breathe it and when someone asks me where I work or what I do they regret it because I simply don’t shut up about how fantastic it is. I won’t bore you with that detail.

Today I had a meeting with my boss, who is a fantastic guy. I admire his enthusiasm and his knowledge, his practical approaches and his realistic vision when breaking down problems. From day one he made me feel invincible as a programmer, and I firmly set my sights on doing my best, getting as many people as I can to notice it, and obviously working my way upwards within a fantastic company.

The company is rapidly expanding, and it’s great to be a part of. They are hiring project manager after project manager, so there’s obviously money to be spent on wages.

During my meeting my boss informed me that they want to extend my contract…. Til the end of July. My face dropped as I knew what that meant. I asked my boss what happens after July and he told me that the company have to let me go.

I could have cried… It was very hard for him to tell me, and he already felt very guilty so I wasn’t going to make him feel worse. As soon as I felt the first tear in my eyes I looked at him and saw a tear in his. I hope that tear meant that he was sad to see me go, and not that he was sad to have to tell me. I regained my composure though, and all I could say was that it sucked. We sat for about 5 minutes. I stared at the wall trying not to break down. Right after the meeting though I ran into the toilets like a little girl and wept for about a half an hour.

My job meant the world to me. I had my sights set on a bright future with a company whom I feel has a fantastic future. I’m right in the middle of massive projects with the company, who will take over? Even if someone with 20 years experience takes over, it’s going to take them at least 6 months to learn what I have learned… That's because I have spent so much time on it. I thought I was becoming valuable. This is nonsense. I’m absolutely heartbroken.

There is something seriously wrong when a company can’t afford to keep on a 300euro a week student but can afford loads of project managers. The average project manager earns €52,320 according to PayScale Ireland (http://www.payscale.com/research/IE/.... Granted they have years of experience, etc. But they really just make sure people do their jobs and then make pretty graphs. I know they do a hell of a lot more than that, but I’m being bitter so give me a break. I just don’t see how they can’t keep on a €15,600 a year employee who works his ass off and always delivers what people want. They could get 3 of me instead of one project manager so technically as long as 1 of us 3 is working every day the ‘project manager’ would be doing their job by default, saving the company having to bother getting a project manager. I know my facts are simplistic, because project managers oversee teams of people, but i think my point is obvious regardless of that little rant being mathematically correct.

I’m sour about this today, but I still work with the company. I know that my last day working there is going to be even worse than today. I have so many friends there, and it’s such a great company. It’s such a pity to see it being swallowed up by the system. It was inevitable though, with staff parties becoming less frequent, people giving out about who ate crisps, constant re-arranging of the office, new employees every day, etc. I wonder how much more we have ACTUALLY achieved.

I am reminded vividly of Christy Moore’s song, ‘Ordinary Man’. I felt for that guy before, but seeing how distraught I am over this job loss at this early stage of my life with no family and few responsibilities, I can relate somewhat to his story, and really feel for him now.

Jobs for people like me are few and far between in Tralee. What�

i saw today my fate to be
my world layed out in dreams
my thoughts and hopes rolled into one
surrounded by meadows and streams

my energy drains and mouth refrains

NetSoc wins "most improved college society in Ireland" at the 2008 BICS awards in Dundalk yesterday

All this hard work guys, and netsoc wins! Delighted...

Had a fantastic time in Dundalk and spoke to some of the lads from games.dcu.ie too, they seemed sound out so we're gonna organise some activities with them :D

I can't believe we won, i was delighted when our names were called out. We should be in the kerryman and some other papers for the weekend... Got a glass plaque and €250 for the society which will be well spent no doubt :D

Thanks! I'm good, just relaxing! I was approached to do tutorials in the college for Maths so I will give that a go. Maybe do more tuts as time goes on. I must do some preliminary research before the PhD starts, I think that officially starts in January but I'm not too sure.

Ya, you told me about the MSc not running. I met Colin in the college but he is doing the MSc in Ed Tech. That is very disappointing that it is not running, especially since you have been in Tralee for the last 5 years. Was it Michael that was also applying to it? Do you know how many applied overall? For us, it started with about 7 or 8 and ended up with 5. Can you take a year out and work for a while or something?

Good god man you have been kept busy! :L Im gone from the Sheen Falls for the past year!! Man where have you been?!! :O Im working for Renew Beauty Salons, we're a chain of salons and have outltes in the Killarney Court, Riverside Hotel in Killaney, Castlerosse in Killarney and the Kenmare Bay. So im based in the Kenmare Bay, im the salon manager there and i must say i love it! :D Ive been there since day one so its like my baby, its cool. What part of Tralee are you living in? My fella is from Keel, only over the road from Tralee, we are always in there!! Was out there during the rose fest, thought it was very quite... Things are getting very quite in Kenmare. Dont go out here much, im normally found in Castlemaine or Boolteens! Must organise a night out in Kenmare sometime too..
